2005 AKMS Short Course Meters Meet - Summary

Wow! What a great turn-out for the short course meters meet. We had 50 people sign up and 47 actually swam. This is the best turn-out we've had for ths meet in several years. We had at least 6 first-timers and several people returning after a long absence. Welcome, and welcome back. Along with the Anchorage crowd, we had swimmers from Fairbanks, Kodiak, and Soldotna. One even returned from Arizona to swim with us!

Thank you to Northern Lights Boosters for running the meet for us. The deck crew was organized by Dave Uldrich and included officials from both Northern Lights and Alaska Pacific Swim Clubs. Thank you to all the deck volunteers for supporting Alaska Masters Swimming. Our meets are not possible without the generous donation of your time.

The record book has lots of changes. There were 57 individual records set, 32 by the women and 25 by the men.

On the women's side, 24 records were broken and 8 are new. Mimi Cook, Lynn De George, and Margret Van Flein went 5 for 5, swimming the maximum number of events and setting records in all. Lynn also picked up two additional records by requesting split times from longer events. Margret Van Flein and Wilma Goldmann were the first female swimmers ever for Alaska Masters in their respective age groups and both went right to work filling in the record book. The oldest women's record broken was the 25-29 200 free by Paige von Hofen. It was last set in 11/88.

On the men's side, 20 records were broken and 5 are new. Rick Abbott, Joel Curtis, and Yaro Mucha all set records in each of their 5 swims. Rick also picked up two additional records from split times. Niel Thomas was the first swimmer in the 60-64 age group to tackle the 1500 free. The oldest men's record broken was men's 75-79 50 free by Yaro Mucha. It was last set in 12/91.

Six relays records were set; two were broken and four are new. The women's 160-199 medley relay beat the existing record by 4.10 seconds. The previous state record was also the top time in the nation in 2004. Way to swim, ladies! For the first time, we had relays in the youngest (72-99) age group and one of the oldest (280-319) age group. Thanks to all who swam on the relays. Besides having lots of fun, we definitely have some contenders for top ten in the nation times.
