The Latest Pennock Island Challenge took place on 10 August 2008 in Ketchikan, AK. Results can be found at the Pennock Island Challenge website at www.alaskateamada.com. The swim was sanctioned by US Masters Swimming and we are looking forward to the 2009 Challenge on 16 August 2009
Ketchikan Masters will be putting on a 1K swim on August 11 that will also be sanctioned; the entry fee will be $20.00 per swimmer and includes at-shirt and cap.
The 2007 AKMS Scholarship recipient Maia Dickinson was announced at the Annual meeting. Details can be found here. Please spread the word and congratulate Maia if you know her or pass congratulations along through her mom, Kim Olmstead, an AKMSwimmer.
Support Swimming and Pools
You can help us promote masters swimming by making sure our new poster (compliments to Rick Abbott) is displayed at every pool in the state. We are particularly interested in displaying the poster at high school meets this fall and USA Swimming meets throughout the year. You can print a small version of the poster on an ordinary printer (8.5 by 11 inch), or I can send you a larger poster by mail if you send me your mailing address. You can help out swimming and aquatic sports in general by printing and displaying a People for Pools sign in your car.

Andrew Billings, former coach at SWAM, wrote a very interesting letter about what he thinks Masters Swimming really should be. It's worth the read. I've posted it here.
Andrew also put together some guidelines regarding safety and etiquette for lap/lane swimming. You'll find some good thoughts here.
For those of you unable to regularly participate in a coached workout with a local club/team, you can receive free workouts in your email box every Sunday.

Our logo was designed by Kimberly Olmsted. She also designed the 2005 SCY Meet Logo. She does very nice work! If you are in need of a team logo or other art, talk to her. She may be able to come up with something for you.
