Alaska Masters Diving

Congrats to Chris Ruff who scored well in his age group at Sring Nationals in Austin, TX in early May. Chris took 2nd, with a total of 363.00 on the 1-meter board, 3rd, with a total of 350.05 on the 3-meter board, and 5th, with a total of 162.80 on the tower. He is preparing for the World Masters Games in Melbourne in October.

There is a masters diving group being organized by Art Saltmarsh in Anchorage. While the group is not directly related to Alaska Masters Swimming, they do promote another watery sport that can indeed be nicely mixed with swimming. In fact, if you are so inclined, you can compete in both sports, swimming and diving, at the FINA World Championships in Christchurch, NZ next March!

OK, you've read this far and you've asked yourself, Masters Diving ??? There sure is. The Alaska Springboard Diving Association (ASDA) is the local organization running US Diving Clubs in the State. US Diving (USD) is the parent organization for our sport and is run somewhat differely than USS and USMS. USD has age group diving through the Masters level in one organization. There are currently two USD teams in the State, Chugiak Divers (CD) and Kenai Peninsula Dive Club (KPDC). Both are trying to promote masters’ level divers.

ASDA has been trying to get some ‘old folks’ out diving for several years now and it looks like interest is building. For competitions, we have been including a Masters category at our meets for several years, but have had no competitors. All that is about to change. There are also meets around the country that you can compete in. There are a few diving web sites that do announce meets. Two are listedand linked below.

USA Diving - www.usadiving.org

Masters Diving - www.n2.net/diving

The next competition in Alaska is:

June ? - Chugiak

*If we get enough masters divers, we can schedule our own meets!

We also hold diving camps in the summer and all USD members are welcome. We usually have a couple of College coaches teaching the camps.

Chugiak Divers has practices twice each week at Bartlett Pool and at Chugiak Pool. Times are listed below. If you have a desire to get back up on the Board, here’s your chance. The only requirement is that you join USD. If you want additional information contact Art Saltmarsh. He has all the necessary forms.

USD Membership - $50.00 - year (January-December)
